Audition

Audition Requirements for All Students

Please read carefully!

Auditions for the 2013-14 Season have ended.

Students from all divisions of Yale University are invited to audition. However, priority for positions in the YSO goes to undergraduate students of Yale College.

All auditioning students must prepare:

  • A 2-minute portion of a solo work
  • ALL of the excerpts for the instrument(s) they wish to audition on (see below)

Students who wish to audition on auxiliary instruments (ex. piccolo, English horn) should prepare all excerpts for the auxiliary instrument as well as all excerpts for the primary instrument. Auditioning on an auxiliary instrument when possible is highly encouraged.

Students who were named alternates in the previous school year should audition as new members.

Auditions for new players will last 10 minutes. Auditions for returning players will last 5 minutes. The repertoire played in the audition will be chosen from the above at the discretion of the music director.

Audition Requirements for String Principals

String principal auditions are open to returning members only. In addition to the repertoire listed above, players who wish to audition for a string principal position must prepare the excerpts listed here. That is, they should prepare a solo work, all of the “tutti” excerpts for the appropriate instrument, and all of the “principal” excerpts.
